American Beauty Standards

Since America is suppose to be a “melting pot”  many people would say our standards include everyone but if you know better you know it’s not true. First off even though we have a high obesity rate and population compared to other countries it’s not considered the beauty standard at all. You will get ridiculed if you’re fat. Most people will judge you for being big even though the average american man is a size 34 and the avg woman is a size 12-14, if I researched that right. Skinny people are on every magazine, TV, and social media outlet. It’s pushed down your throat. Not only skinny but you’re seen as really attractive if you work out and have a toned or muscular body.

Straight hair is ideal as well. You will always see in movies when a woman or man gets a makeover they start off with curly hair and then it’s straightened, i.e The Princess Dairies (pic below). Up until recently it was very hard to find information or hair products for curly or kinky haired people. Trust me I know. I grew up with water and gel being my best friend since there weren’t many options for my hair. As well as being constantly saying, “Do you straighten your hair? I bet your hair would look better straightened.Your hair is very poofy” BLAH BLAH BLAH!

For right now, having a big butt is in but I give it 5-10 yrs before everyone will go back to liking small butts again. Big breasts have been in for awhile like since Pamela Anderson so who knows when that will end.  As well as having bigger lips but that will die down as well which can be credited to becoming popular because of the Kardashians. Now none of these people started these trends! They just popularized it.

To be very honest being white or a White American is an ideal beauty standard. Latinos, Black people (African American), Native American (Indigenous), Middle Eastern, and Asians do get made fun of for their looks. Whether it’s being hairy, having a big butt or lips, wearing your hair in a traditional fashion, having mono-lids,  big noses, and other things as well. The closer you are to looking like the stereotypical white person the more “beautiful” you are or seen. You can try to rebuttal this but there’s too many facts stating this as the truth. However, don’t worry there is someone out there for you and someone will think you’re beautiful as you are.

As usually these pics are not mine.

American Dating

Just like any culture we have our own dating culture. It’s has changed a lot over the years and is constantly changing.

So, to be fair I’m very young early 20’s so this is my perspective of my generation.

Hmm, where can I start. Usually the guys take charge and talk to the women first but that’s starting to change and a lot of women are starting to become the “hunters”.

There really isn’t any courting at all, just flirting until someone asks each other to be a girlfriend or boyfriend. Most people don’t go on dates to get to know each other. People go on dates after they are officially together usually. Most people will ask to hang out or just want your number but nothing too serious. Guys usually don’t want to pay for dates because the girl might not actually be interested, he’s cheap, or a pig.  So, don’t expect much romance. A lot of guys really just want to hit it and leave. So keep your guards up women if you don’t like sleeping with strangers.

So, yeah there’s really not much to say. You might meet his/her parents but that doesn’t guarantee that you’re in a relationship because really we usually don’t care what our parents think we just know it leaves a good impression on the person we’re dating and it’s something we think we have to do. Some people let you meet their parents on the first date while others wait a year or more.  It depends on the person.

Unless one of you says it’s official it’s not official!

If you don’t ask you can end up in a situationship or being friends with benefits. The guy or the woman will not claim you as the significant other. So watch out. It doesn’t matter if you guys have been talking or acting like a couple for years. To other person you could very well be the side piece. Yes, people will play with your heart like that.

American dating is very complicated from what I see and hear. I don’t deal with people who like playing games. So I can only tell you what I see.

Also, please be careful with men there have been several cases where women have been killed because they have said No to not dating or giving out their numbers when the woman isn’t interested.

*If someone asks if you want to Netflix and chill they just want to have sex*

If you don’t want to do this please decline

Thanks for reading! I truly appreciate it! 🙂

To be an Extrovert or Introvert in the US

Ok, so it’s clear to say that most Americans are extroverted if you don’t know what that means then look it up! I’m just playing. An extrovert  is someone who gets energy from being around others while an introvert is someone who gets their energy from being by themselves. This is not say introverts don’t like socializing but they do need alone time. So, being an extrovert in America is waaaay better than being an introvert.

In school settings you’re treated better if you’re louder and interact with your classmates. As the cliche goes a closed mouth doesn’t get fed and this definitely applies in America. Even if you’re obnoxiously loud most people think that’s better than not talking at all as most introverts do. They will constantly ask you why you’re quiet and why don’t you talk. Trust me I know it’s annoying. You lose points in class because you don’t feel the need, not in the mood, or have an anxiety so you don’t want to participate in class discussions.

In work settings, it’s pretty much just like in school. If you don’t talk or speak up people will try to get over on you and treat you as a doormat if you let them. Also, say goodbye to being promoted because it doesn’t matter how long you’ve worked for the company but who you know and if they like you or can remember you. So of course, extroverted people have the upper hand in the US once again.

Dating situations, like I said before a open mouth doesn’t get fed. If you don’t speak people will assume you’re weird, a bitch, prissy, or unapproachable. Therefore, you hardly ever date people as an introvert because you’re unapproachable, unless you’re drop dead gorgeous (cliche). If you’re a man and can’t speak up, Good Luck! Most women want someone who approaches them though this is changing. A lot of women are starting to approach men first though.

Overall,  If you’re introverted and you want to fit in, pretend you’re an extrovert because you will have a better experience.

Grocery Shopping in America

So, this kind of ties in with the Food post but, I wanted to get into a different area of food. Where do Americans shop for food. Mostly in supermarkets. We hardly ever go to farmer’s markets or open markets like in France.  Even the food that’s suppose to be organic is sold in chain (super)markets.

Walmart: This place is like the McDonald’s of grocery shopping. Like McDonald’s only recently have they closed some stores down but it was very shocking to a lot of people. This store speaks to the masses of America because they sell products at a cheaper price than most. It’s their slogan “lower prices” and if a store is selling a product at a cheaper price and you show an employee this store is selling it at this price Walmart will sell it to you at that price, just to make a profit.  Walmart has pretty much everything you need. Tires, radios, fishing poles, yoga mats, toys, bikes, veggies, meat, cereal, clothes, shoes, bras, etc. I mean everything, they have their hands on a lot. However, they are seen as “ghetto” to some unlike their sister brand Sam’s.

Sam’s club: Ok, before going in you have to have a membership, so don’t bother if you don’t.  Well it was originally created by the same person who created Walmart. Instead their target market seems to be people in middle class areas who have kids. Everything is packaged to buy in bulk. So, don’t go in there expecting to buy 1 paper towel. Oh no, you have to buy the 36 pack.  It’s like a mini warehouse type of vibe too. Best part is that they give out free samples of food. Hmmm, so delicious. Only reason why I go with my grandma there, hahaha.  As far as I know they have one competitor.

Costco: It’s like Sam’s club, just there competitor. Except I think you can go in there without a membership. I haven’t gone in there in so long, I don’t remember. Costco tends to be a better company when it comes to their employee benefits.

Target: Is the upscale Walmart. Personally I shop at both but as some people will say I’m bougie. So, I would never buy clothes at Walmart but I would definitely buy clothes from Target. I just buy food from Walmart. Target sells food as well but doesn’t have much variety and its more expensive and Target is more for clothes, furnishings, health, beauty, those types of things. Target is more so for middle class people who can afford to pay $4 for orange juice and $20 on a shirt.

Whole Foods: Is for people who are into being healthy. Everything is “organic”. They have every trending diet and anything vegan you need if you’re a vegetarian or vegan. I’ve been in a couple of times but it’s like Target. Expensive. Anything in America that’s healthy is overpriced. So, I can’t tell you more than this about this store.

Aldi’s: I go here to shop for my veggies and fruit. They have healthy stuff here but at a cheaper price. However, it’s not a big store like Whole Foods and only select areas has an Aldi’s.  They always have sales on their fruits and veggies especially if it’s in season. And I love it. They are like Target when it comes to variety in food. There’s not much to look at.

Kroger’s: Similar to Target and Walmart. Its prices I would say are in between Target and Walmart prices. This store is big on their loyalty program. So if you have a Kroger card you can get “discounts”.

Trader Joe’s: This is a competitor of Whole Foods. Very similar to each other.trader-joes

There are plenty of other places but I can’t remember them at this moment or they are more local and will only find in those states or cities.

(non of these photos are mine just googled them)
